We’ve officially been in a worldwide pandemic for one year; which has felt like many lifetimes filled with panic, uncertainty, deaths, fear, hope, and faith. The past year has highlighted who is essential and who really makes our world function. We’ve seen the beauty in the human race and unfortunately the ugliness that exists too. We’ve experienced COVID at the same time but a little differently or as the expression on social media has been “we’re in the same storm but in different boats” which has really opened our eyes to so many injustices that exist in so many systems that make up society.
As we continue to fight and heal during COVID, I want to reflect on what I’ve learned throughout this pandemic.
The Selfish and The Selfless: Two polar opposites but very strong characteristics that were exhibited at the beginning of the Pandemic. You had groups of people hoarding supplies and price gouging, then you had businesses and strangers giving what they could to help those without. It comes down to the fact that many people have never had to sacrifice or care for something bigger than themselves and it shows.
System Reboot: There is no doubt that this pandemic has highlighted the many cracks within the many systems that make up society. Many businesses have reported that some employees have been more productive working from home. Some people have had the opportunity to create their own businesses, changed careers, or even had to make some very difficult decisions. For me, I took the time to reflect, obtain my certification in ophthalmology, work on passion projects, and take the time to recharge and reflect
Masks: So many things changed a year ago but there are a few things that have been implemented that I now appreciate: Masks, some find it annoying but I’ve learned to appreciate them, especially in my line of work; the containment of hot breath has been a blessing. They have been the new “must-have item” for entrance (almost) everywhere. The masks have even reduced the number of colds and influenza cases this year. We are now walking billboards of many messages, you choose what you want to convey to the world with your mask. Now, I’m not saying keep it long-term, I’m just saying that I appreciate its function so much more.
TikTok: If you know then you know. Personally, I find the app to be inspirational, educational, healing, and creative. It has been a nice distraction from the constant negativity that is COVID. The laughs, the jokes, the dance challenges, and the debate of the feta pasta- I’m a fan. The app is a platform for so many to be their authentic selves which have encouraged so many others to do the same. Not to mention the number of influencers that have launched their brands on this app is inspiring.
Social Distancing: If I can see the fine details on your mask, you’re too close! Now, I know it’s not possible in all situations like dentists and eye clinics, they have to be up close and personal to do their jobs. However, I like not having to “squeeze” by and having to yell “excuse me” twenty times before someone moves out of your path. Personal space is important and needs to be respected.
There is no doubt that COVID has caused a lot of destruction and will continue to challenge all of us for many years to come but I think it is important that we continue to learn from this as a world, commit to understanding each other, and doing better in all aspects of life.
